Freecom Hard DriveExternal hard drives are no news on the market and can be found in many different packages and shapes, but almost all are based on plain hard drives packed in boxes equipped with some interface for computer communication. This time we are reviewing a device like that, which comes from the company Freecom. The whole series of these drives is called Drive Sq and it includes portable hard drives, which are made for desktop and portable devices. The desktop models in which this reviewed unit belongs to are produced in capacities up to 3TB.

Last year’s flood in Thailand have made a total chaos on the hard drive market. A lot of people were wondering if that was the end of the hard drive era. Until now the situation was not good at all, but it seems that for a different type of media storage we will have to wait for at least a decade.

Seagate has announced that they achieved a drastic increase in the limit of bit rate per inch. The former limit was 620Gbit/in2 and they managed to increase that to 1Tb per inch. This amazing breakthrough was made by using a new innovative method of data recording called HAMR (heat assisted magnetic recording). This technology foresees the usage of a heat laser for data recording in addition to the normal head reader that is still used for reading the information. Read more of this post

When there is a need of using a 3.5 inch hard drive via a USB port, we usually think of getting a special drawer for the disk that will give us the conversion of the interface, to an USB. But, these drawers are mainly big, so they don’t suffice the need of all the users and plugging in a new hard drive, usually means a bit of tinkering with a screwdriver.

So, now we are reviewing an interesting alternative to this problem. Instead of a regular hard drive drawer, on the end of a USB cable there is a console (dock), for the SATA hard drive, on which there are SATA inputs for the interface and power, a diode to indicate operation of the hard drive and also a jack for additional power, which uses the regular charger, with a switch. We stepped into 2012 and still the HD television is scarce. The Blu-ray technology is still expensive; there are only several TV channels that have HD capabilities and not everyone has a satellite dish and HD receiver. There is one more option and it is watching HD on the internet or on a smart TV, which is quite expensive.  If you don’t have a pricy smart TV you will need to connect your computer or buy an HD player. That is what we are reviewing here, the SamtecMPD-306 HD.
