Xerox Phaser 3010 – Laser Printer Killer

Xerox Phaser 3010The American printer company Xerox has been on the market for a long time now providing numerous printing solutions that are ranging from home offices to big professional printing offices. One of their lines of offers is called Phaser and now it has something special that will be a promising revolution of the laser printers. The basis of this model is the LE Diodes instead of laser.

The LED technology is taking its swing these past few years in all the consumer electronics sectors so it was time to make its path to the printer world. The LED printers have made their introduction in this field two decades ago, but they never made a good prints and the laser won even though it was more expensive. Until a year ago this almost forgotten type of printing was just an idea that never got fully realized, but with the previously mentioned boom of the LED implementation and the very slow progress of laser printer improvement forced Xerox to look into this type of printing and update it.

In cooperation with their long-term partner Fuji, Xerox has developed a new type of printing head Hi-Q that they claim makes print as good as a modern time laser printer. The way the printer takes the paper, the way it transfers the tonner powder from the tonner station to the photo sensitive drum and the roasting of the paper so that the tonner would stick are identical in both types of printers.

The whole system is made out of two big parts, First the tonner-station, in which you can find the tonner mixed with charged metal particles and secondly there is the magnet roller which brings the tonner to the other part. The other part is a photosensitive drum which has the ability to change the polarity when exposed to light with which it attracts the tonner particles that are found on the roller next to it. From here the process is clear. The laser illuminates the parts of the roller that need to attract the tonner powder, the roller imprints the picture on the paper and we have the finished product. The problem with the laser is that involves a complex system involving a lot of parts that are needed to move it along the drum. Instead of using this complex system the LED system is made out of a lot of LED’s that are put in the whole area thus not needing any moving parts.

The old LED models had max resolution of 600 tpi, but now the Xerox printer has a max resolution of 1200×1200 tpi, which is double than the laser competitors of the same category. It is a bit slower than the laser printer with a first page time of 8.6 sec for text and 14 sec for PDF but when you see that it has a starting price of 50€ it is a great buy.
