Sandia National Laboratories- Air Revolution

Sandia National LaboratoriesAs computers become faster and stronger their need for power consumption is growing, which leads to their unavoidable and unstoppable heating. According to that, we need bigger and stronger cooling systems, fans and other kinds of heat dissipaters, which means more speed that leads to much more noise and opposite to the processors, their performances have certain physical limitations. The water coolant systems offer much greater performances, but are much more complex to set up and maintain, as well as being much more expensive.

The proof that air still has some potential to cool down these modern time beasts comes from Sandia National Laboratories. The prototype of their cooler resembles a lot to a classical box cooler, but when taking into consideration its performances, it exceeds them by 30 times. The secret to this kind of big efficiency is hidden in the fact that the whole dissipation surface of this cooler is at the same time a blower fan. That way, it eliminates all the headaches of the normal air cooler, like a bad air circulation around the dissipation surface, the collection of dust and the high level of noise produced by this kind of coolers, which is made by the fans.

The cooler is quite simple and it is made out of a base, which accumulates the heat of the chip and a rotating cooler/fan, which disperses the hot air in the surrounding surface. The distance between the cooler and the base surface is 0.025 mm, which is there to eliminate any friction. Even though air is a bad heat conductor, this kind of a small gap doesn’t lower down the performances of the cooler and to confirm that we can tell you that this cooler is still 10 times better than a 10 times bigger classic type cooler. While working, it is totally quiet, even though it works on 2000 RPM.

This kind of design doesn’t need any special manufacturing process and because the used materials are much less than when making a normal cooler, this cooler will be much cheaper with a manufacturing price of just $5.
