At the beginning of this year Canon has refreshed their collection of compact PowerShot cameras and between them the two cameras that we are reviewing today found their place. Because the only difference between them is the optical stabilization that found its place on the (IS) version, we are reviewing them at the same time.

These cameras with their look and dimensions look more like the models from the Ixus series than a true PowerShot’s. The housing is small and made in high quality and the camera itself is quite light. The front side of the housing is made out of colored metal, while the other side is plastic and black. On the top side you can find the power button and a shoot button, around which you can find the zoom ring. On the back of the device you can find a 2.7 inch screen and on the right side from it you can find additional control buttons. On the right side there is a USB mini-b connector that can be used as a computer, or A/V connector. The camera holds a rechargeable battery of 680mAh. An SD card is not supplied with it, even though it doesn’t have a built in memory.

Cannons lens has a 5x optical zoom, with distance measurements reaching between 28 and 140 mm (32mm equivalent). The lens aperture goes between F2.8 and F6.9, so the lens is not well lit in telephoto stance, so it might not produce top quality pictures in low light. It has a sensor of 16MP, which by us is not needed. The photographs have a maximal quality of 4608×3456 pixels and the video can be recorded in two resolutions, in 720p HD with 25 f/s and 640×480 with 30 f/s. During filming you can use the optical zoom.

These are beginner’s cameras, so the regular wheel with the choice of the settings has been left out and everything needs to be chosen through the menu. There is a big choice between predefined settings, as well as the full auto setting. These cameras are a great choice for the ultimate beginners and with prices of about 100 €, they are a great buy.
