Fifty Three Percent Of American Seniors Use Internet and Email

Recent research has come out with an important data that more and more American adults aged 65 or older use the Internet or email. The research is indicating the trend towards the large scale use of the web not only in middle-aged and young people, but also in the older generation.

According to the research, it was found that older people are going online in recent years. Till now, there was very little growth among Internet users in this age group. Today, as many as 53% of older Americans use the Internet and email, although they are not much into social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. For seniors, it is mostly email.

The percentage of seniors using email is 86%, but that doesn’t mean that they check their mail everyday. Only 48% check their mails on a daily basis.

Mobile phone use is also growing rapidly among seniors. 69% of seniors have a mobile phone. With the web available on mobile phones, the future for the Internet is bright and growing brighter with each day. Transition from television and even computer to Internet on the mobile phones is growing in all age groups. Due to this shift to computers and mobile phones, the market for web and mobile apps is also increasing.

Researchers also discovered that 70% of seniors accessed the Internet everyday. Leaving aside computers, seniors are much lagging behind in the use of smartphones and tablets. Only 39% of seniors have broadband at their home.

The trend to be noticed here is that seniors adopt a technology after it has been adopted by other age-groups and is being used world over. If the use of smartphones and tablets grows as much as computers, seniors will begin to adopt that technology too.

The Internet has become indispensible now. With online banking, job portals, news, entertainment and information present on the Internet, it is practically impossible for some to keep away from it. From judging the trend, the Internet is only going to spread to mobiles and devices, making it an indispensible part of every household.
