Bitviz: A Unique Visualization Tool For Network Traffic and Files

Bitviz

Bitviz

Bitviz is a Java-based visualization tool for network traffic and files. The tool turns bytes into square colors which are then placed in a floating grid to allow structures and patterns to emerge in the data.

The tool currently offers live and static analysis of PCAP data. It can also load any file type and display it. Currently, Bitviz has the following dependencies: jnetpcap, java, winpcap.

Bitviz is compatible with Windows, Linux and Freebd. Currently, it is in a closed beta, but will soon be available to other users as well when it will be launched on June 1st, 2012. Future enhancements of Bitviz include packet forging, hex editing and representational sound.

Ben McCarty, the co-founder of Bitviz said about the creation of Bitviz, “We created this tool because looking at walls of hexadecimal and trying to find suspicious data was annoying. Also, trying to make signatures for everything was dumb, so we wanted something that could rely on the user to recognize that something is different about the data and notice patterns.”

Bitviz is a tool that can be of immense help to malware analysts, hex editors, reverse engineers, digital forensics and network security because it transforms the hex into something that can easily be viewed and understood.

Currently, the team of Bitviz comprises of Ben McCarty and John Hogeboom. Bitviz is self-funded till now.
