Spree raises $1.5 million for open source e-commerce project in seed funding

Spree Commerce, an open source free commerce solution created by Sean Schofield, raises 1.5 million in seed funding by True Ventures. Participating in the round were as Aol Ventures along with angels like Sean Glass.

Spree is powered by the popular Ruby on Rails framework and was designed to simplify customization and upgrades. Spree has in the recent past received much popularity for receiving hundreds of contributions, which were translated into 30 languages. After this initial success of Spree, it has been gaining more popularity.

Sean Schofield is also the creator of Rails Dog, a services company that builds customized sites for those who do not have any engineering experience so that they can easily implement the solution. Rails Dog will now offer consulting services, as Spree has been officially included in Spree Commerce Inc.

Its founder has reiterated that Spree will remain open-source and its licensing will not change for personal as well as commercial use. The team at Spree are working on flexibility and customization to refine its ecommerce platform.

Spree offers hosting and support, and makes customization process easy. It provides its code to businesses and individuals who want to create a customized checkout flow according to specific needs. Hosted solutions mostly give ‘one size fits all’ checkout process. Spree, on the other hand, gives you full access to the code so that you can use a single page or multiple pages checkout to suit your exact requirements.

The project is, according to Spree Commerce Inc, is maintained by a core team of developers and is freely available for commercial use under the terms of the New BSD License.
